What can I expect if I witness the cremation of my companion?
At Resting Paws we offer witnessing of the semi-private and private cremation free of charge. Since December 2017 we look after cremations on Saturday to give more people a chance to come out and be there when we tend to the cremation.
We work with you to find a time that is convenient for you to come out to Woodlawn and be there for the cremation. We ask that you arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to give you a chance to say a final good-bye.
Semi-Private customers have to be more flexible when we set the schedule. If you opt for the semi-private cremation you pet is displayed in one of two areas. For insertion in the crematory chamber, your pet will either be placed in a cremation pan or on the hearth of the crematory. Be prepared that other pet-owners are witnessing the cremation of their pet at the same time as you. Cremation takes between 1.5 to 2 hours. To keep on track with the daily schedule we do not wait for late arrivals.
If you opted for a private cremation your companion is displayed and you have time to bid final farewells. Your pet alone is placed in the crematory and more flexibility is built in for time selection. The next step is insertion of your pet in the crematory and the cremation process begins. This takes between 1 and 1.5 hours depending on the weight of your pet.
If you decide to stay and be part of the whole process it is up to you how much or how little you want to see. Some pet -owners leave after saying good-bye and come back later to pick up the urn. Others wait in the office or go for a walk.
After the cremation process is completed we remove the remains from the crematory. If your pet was placed in a pan, the pan is removed and set aside to cool down. If your pet was placed on the hearth the remains are swept in to a container and set aside for cooling down.
Once the remains have cooled they are taken to our processing table one by one. We place the bone fragments in the bone processor to be processed into a fine powder. Once this is completed the ashes are placed in a plastic bag marked with your pets’ name and date of cremation. This bag is then placed in the urn and put in the return package.
The return package is given to you and you return home.
It is not uncommon for clients to keep their pet with them until cremation day. We coordinate an appointment time and look after the cremation immediately allowing them to return home with the urn a few hours later. This way their pet never leaves their care. This is mostly done with client traveling long distances from Kingston, Cornwall, and Renfrew.
